Celebrate Democracy- Halifax's Chartist Festival

Community singing, School's performance workshops, banner workshops, reminiscence sessions and research into the life and times of Ben Rushton culminate in a weekend of events in his honour.

“Celebrate Dermocracy- Halifax’s Chartist Festival” will present the work done by schools and community groups to the wider public of Halifax.

The weekend will start of Friday 14th July with a performance at the Ridings School of the Life and Times of Ben Rushton, for family and friends, and a public lecture on Rushton and the Halifax Chartists by Dr JA Hargreaves at Halifax Centrral Library.

On Saturday 15th July a parade through Woolshops and the Piece Hall will lead to a 2nd performance by primary school-children to the public at Square Chapel Arts Centre.
In the eventing the Yorkshire Chartist Choir, specially formed for the occasion, will be joined by Roy Bailey, Pete Coe, Chris Coe and memebrs of the community, to present an evening of songs and words for the Chartists.

On Sunday, 2-4pm, the cemetery will be opened for a final ceremony at Rushton's graveside, and an exhibition of the projects findings and interpretation will open at the Piece Hall Gallery.
