History of the Township of Midgley
Location: Calderdale
The group intend to record the history of the textile industry in this village of the Upper Calder V alley.
Much of the area has been built up as a result of the textile trade. With the last mill closing in the mid 1980's there is local interest in researching this heritage and recording the memories of the people who worked in the mills until their closure.
The group has uncovered evidence of the transition from domestic weaving to the establishment of the large, industrial mills and their subsequent decline and will study this in depth and interpret it for the wider community. Some oral history recordings exist from the 1970's and a photographic archive is held in private ownership - these will be accessed as part of the research for the project.
Activities will involve two-ten week WEA courses on local history research techniques, visit to the Calderdale Archives, guided walks, guest lectures and oral history training and recording sessions.
