Power in the Landscape
Location: Calderdale

The project will explore the decline of hydroelectricity as a source of power for the mills in the Upper Calder Valley. The group will research the various mills in the area, and study the effects on the change in power in the valley, in tems of the people who lived there and on the environment.

The group will carry out desk research and a general audit of all the mills in the valley, before researching the specific history of a selection of the mills. The group will also undertake fieldwork to research the water management systems of the mills (mill ponds, goits) which are drying up and disappearing from the landscape.

The project will also focus on the lives of the people who worked in the mills and will explore the changes from manufacture on a small scale at home to the introduction of the large factory environment and its social impact. The group will provide workshops and training for members of the group and community on accessing records and using them for research (104 workshops). The research will be presented in the form of a booklet and a working model of a watermill will be produced to interpret in a practical manner the history of waterpower in the valley.
