Zoological Trail Pilot - The Spring Bank Elephant Walk
Location: City of Kingston Upon Hull
Hull Zoological Gardens existed between 1840 and 1862 in the Spring Bank area of Hull. The group would like to celebrate the existence of the gardens and interpret the story of a 7 year old elephant that lived in temporary accommodation outside the gardens and walked through Spring Bank every morning and evening until the elephant house was built.
The local community will be involved in planning a heritage trail researching interpretative materials and in workshops to design way markers, a leaflet and an interpretative sculpture that will form the destination of the trail. The trail will link the area with Hull City Centre. Skills will be developed in local history research building on research carried out by a local adult education class, project management, teamwork and participating in heritage interpretation workshops.
Outputs will include exhibitions of old press cuttings/photographs and maps, guided walks with training provided for local walk leaders and material for the lhi website.
