The Elephant Sculpture is Installed
Location: City of Kingston Upon Hull
Martin Heron's original sketches of the elephant standing on her trunk on top of a pole immediately won the hearts of Spring Bank residents. His work was inspired by the work of local researchers on the Hull Zoological Gardens. He says, "the elephant references the once much loved elephant who loved gingerbread who was a feature attraction of the Zoological Gardens, Spring Bank, Hull. I have devised a centrepiece sculpture that reflects the fascination of the elephant by local people past and present. Performing what seems to be the impossible, the elephant sculpture acts as a metaphor to encourage looking at the world in a different way, reflecting the spirit of Albany Street and Spring Bank and giving it a strong sense of identity within the history of Hull".

Elephant Sculpture Installation
Venue: Albany Street, Spring Bank, Hull

On 18 November 2005 a long awaited stainless steel wire cage with decoration influenced by Victorian scroll work and iron railings arrived in Albany Street. The wonderful sculpture, inspired by the 'elephant who loved gingerbread' was to take her place, centre stage, to mark the end point of the Spring Bank Elephant Walk. Watched in awe by local residents, the sculpture was lifted into place with a crane and secured on top of her 3 metre stainless steel pole.
