Woodlands Parade and Gala
Location: Doncaster

The group would like to involve members of the local community and schools in researching and celebrating the industrial heritage of the development of Bridsworth Colliery.

In doing so they will address the social and cultural history of the 'Squares' housing that were built as homes for the miners and their families. This is a construction of 100 houses on a 24-acre site following the principles of the Garden City Plan prioritising the preservation of green spaces.

The project will centre on the staging of a community gala. This will be a recreation of a gala held to celebrate a Royal visit by King George in 1912. This was arranged as the colliery supplied coal to the Royal Household and also to mark the development of the 'Squares' housing.

Outputs will include a booklet and video researched and designed by holding a series of informal workshops open to all, workshops to plan the gala and parade, an exhibition and the gala.

Local people attending the gala will wear costumes reflecting the traditional dress of the time when King George made his visit.
