A Yorkshire Garland
Location: East Riding of Yorkshire

The group want to establish an internet collection of folk songs reflecting the heritage of Yorkshire. This will be established from collections of songs already held by group members and supplemented by contributions from the public.

The group will hold four locally based song collection evenings where they will encourage members of the public to contribute songs, or versions of songs they know to the collection. These evenings will be advertised in the local press, which will also give an opportunity for people to contribute their songs. These songs will be recorded at the evenings or at another time convenient to the participants.

The group hope to build on the collection and access songs which relate to the fishing and other industrial heritage of the area as well as rural songs. The group also hope to collect folk songs from ethnic groups who have settled in the area and developed their own traditional folk songs. The group will work with local schools and with the organisation Ethno England, which currently works with schools in the area raising the awareness of the heritage of folk songs.

Once the songs are collected they will be accessible via a web sire and on CD ROM (copies distributed free to local libraries and information points. The web sire will be launched with a concert reflecting some of the songs collected and open to the wider community.
