Driffield Canal Heritage Project
Location: East Riding of Yorkshire

The group will involve the local community in researching the history of Driffield Canal. The canal was built in 1770 leading to the development of Driffield as the 'capital of the Wolds'.

An act of Parliament decreed when it was built that it should be run on a not for profit basis and it is now managed by a charity. It has grade 2 listed locks and cranes.

The project will investigate that construction and former uses of the canal involving local groups, such as the ramblers and school children. The information uncovered will be interpreted on site with information boards depicting the story of the canal. By working with the ramblers and Yorklhire Tourist Board the group will produce a leaflet guide to walks along the canal explaining its unique history.

Volunteers will lead guided walks as part of this project. Other outputs include boat trips, exhibitions and talks to the Parish Councils and interest groups and a gala at the completion of the project. Skills will be enhanced in research under the guidance of local historians, IT planning and preparing interpretation materials.
