Hidden Holderness Project
Location: East Riding of Yorkshire
The Hidden holderness group was formed in August 2000 as a locally based community group from the withernsea and South East Holderness regeneration areas. The group activity focuses around the parishes of Easington, Hollym, Holmpton, Halsham, Rimswell, Roos, Welwick, Sunk Island, East Garton, Keyingham, Roos, Patrington and Ottringham.
The group has researched and published a Lost Village Trail - a guide to the lost villages of the holderness coast. Hidden holderness has identified 22 villages which have been lost to the waters of the sea and the humber. The guide creates a trail for visitors, and guides them through the evidence left on the ground of once thriving commercial and fishing ports and villages.
The Lost Villages Trail was launched at the Sea Festival in July 2001. The central attractions of this one-day event were performances from well known groups specialising in sea shanties and music. These included The Harry Browns of Bristol, Landlocked, G&T, The Sheringham shantymen and The Pavilion Pierrots.
Hidden holderness is currently engaged in Phase 2 of the project, focusing on awareness-raising and interpretation of the local maritime heritage. They are working on a new Shipwreck trail to achieve greater local understanding of these features of local heritage.
