Project Completion Summary
Location: East Riding of Yorkshire
Giant Bradley Heritage Trail Project Completion Summary Author: Stuart Curwen, Project Treasurer
As most members will be aware, our Town Heritage Trail opened in May this year; but final endorsement from the Lottery Heritage Initiative was only received in October. I for one heaved a sigh of relief. Little did we realise that we would need all of the two years stipulated by the L.H.I. to complete the project. We, in our inexperience believed 12 months would be ample - wrong!! The sub-committee, whose hard labours accomplished the task, consisted of Tony Leonard, Joe Harry, Mavis Newman, Jean Curwen and myself.
Early in 2003 we approached the L.H.I. for a grant, but preparation actually began long before that. Success required much groundwork. The application contained a full description of the project and costings for all aspects, including three written quotes for each section. Letters of support from various sections of the community, detailed maps of the trail route, together with photographs, a summary of listed buildings and an illustrated history of Giant Bradley were also included.
Once approved we were quickly off the mark, with the manufacture of the 23 'life sized' granite footprints, but then unforeseen problems arose, causing lengthy delays and a dramatic rise in costs. We were able to complete the project only after receiving a generous grant from the Market Weighton Community Charity Shop, for which we are most grateful.
Although the Society has carried out various projects in the past, I think I am correct in saying that this has been the most complex, time consuming and rewarding. There is great pleasure in viewing parties of schoolchildren walking The Trail, or seeing visitors, brochure in hand, examining the many points of interest highlighted around the circular route. Our Town has a great heritage and I am proud to have been involved in bringing this to life through the medium of our most unique character, William ‘Giant’ Bradley.
Stuart Curwen, Treasurer.
