Colne Valley Wildwood
Location: Kirklees
The Colne Valley Tree Society was founded in 1964 by local people who wanted to improve their valley and restore their woodland heritage by planting on industrial eyesores and quarres.
This project aims to restore the Pennine upland oak/birch woodlands (identified through research of old maps of the area and through Colne Valley Countryside Strategy 1995) in targeted cloughs by fencing off areas from the grazing stock, planting new woodland with volunteers from the community and negotiating public access. The fencing will be completed by contractors using long lasting materials and incorporting training days for volunteers.
The planting will involve many voluntary groups and individuals in the community including children and youth groups. The project will also be included on the Colne Valley Tree Society Website. All the land proposed is in private ownership with one third owned by Yorkshire Water. The sites have either "open" access with Public Rights of Way through are agreed access.
