Holme Valley Riverside Way
Location: Kirklees

This project has been developed over two years, following extensive community consultation through the local community forum. The aim is to develop an intepreted walk, taking into account the built, industrial, natural and social heritage of the riverside. The project group has a core membership from the Civic Trust, who work with nearby village trusts, healthcare centres, parish councils, other interest groups and Kirklees Metropolitan Council.

A public meeting has been planned and an estimated 50+ people from throughout the area will participate in research, designing outputs, and in other aspects of running the project. Initially, research will build a history of the area.

Thereafter, intepretative panels will be installed en-route and an accompanying booklet will expain the local heritage in more detail. The opening planned for August 2002 will be marked by a heritage exhibition and guided walk of the route.

The project will be undertaken by several local groups representing various interests and localities along the 6 mile route. The Holme has a wealth of industrial heritage, primarily related to early woollen industries. There are several built sites of interest and much wildlife to provide a wealth of heritage material to research and ultimately interpret and celebrate.
