Naming the River
Location: Kirklees

The Trust aim to build on their experiences delivering Phase 1, 'River Colne Heritage Project', to involve the local communities in the villages of Slaithwaite, Linthwaite, Marsden and Milnsbridge in investigating their lnks with the river. The river is often hidden from view and it is easy to overlook it.

Members of existing groups (Colne Valley History Society, Slaithwaite Environment Group) with interests in the natural, built and industrial heritage of the area will work with new volunteers to raise awareness of the river. Workshops will take place in each village to investigate the history behind the textile industry (Titanic Mill, Lowestwood Mill) and local flora and fauna of the Valley. Material will be exhibited in schools and community buildings in each village and pulled together in a publication.

Skills will be developed in local history research, IT and design. Each village will produce an interpretative plaque at the end of the project to be placed on a bridge over the river central to each village, naming the river and highlighting an aspect of the village's heritage connected to the river.
