First Woodchip Volunteer Day
Location: Kirklees

Sunday May 7th saw nine hardy souls brave a wet and miserable afternoon to participate in the first Woodchip volunteer project in Pighill wood.

The enthusiastic volunteers gathered at "Roskear" at 1.30 p.m. with the intention of cleaning the long flight of steps that run from the golf course up through the lower portion of the woodland to the central carriage drive.

The nine intrepid workers, dug, scraped and swept enthusiastically for over three hours and successfully accomplished the intended task of clearing and cleaning the steps and as an added bonus also managed to rebuild a considerable section of dry stone wall on the top side of the carriage way. This will help to prevent inappropriate access to the woodland by motor cyclists, mountain bikers, quad bikers and horse riders.

It was very encouraging to see the enthusiastic way in which everyone worked through what was a miserable and wet afternoon and it was inspirational to see what those nine people managed to achieve in such a short space of time.

There is still a tremendous amount of work to do but as the old saying goes "a journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step". The results of Sunday's efforts were a giant first step for the Woodchip project.

11 June 2006
Next Working Party

Our next Working Party will be on the afternoon of Sunday, 11th June and the main objectives will be to remove as much "man-made" rubbish from the woodland as possible, to demolish all the unsightly jumps, ramps and various other constructions that have been built and to repair the landscape. We will also be having a stone scavenge to return the stone that has been scattered all over the woodland floor back to the walls in preparation for use in repair and reconstruction. Any offers of help no matter how small will be gratefully appreciated. We meet at Roskear at 1.00 pm (you can contact Raymond and Christine on 01484 656389 for directions). Coffee and biscuits will provided after the event.
