WOODCHIP - Woodland Conservation and Heritage Improvement Project
Location: Kirklees
The group intend to research the history of Pighill Wood, one of the few remaining areas of ancient upland oak woodland remaining in the Kirklees District.
The group will conduct a survey of the woodlands flora and fauna (tree survey, bat survey, vegetation survey). An access and recreation survey will be conducted to gauge the community feeling about the area. The local community will be invited to contribute to a visual A-Z of Pighill Wood (through coffee mornings, newsletters, exhibitions).
Local schools and youth groups will also be invited to contribute to this piece of work.
Members of the group and the community will be trained in conservation methods and will assist in conservation work in the woodland (drystone walling, ground clearance, tree planting, forestry management). The group will also be trained in archaeological survey techniques and will produce a survey of the woodland. Pighill Wood has suffered from vandalism and improper use (lighting of fires, use by motorbikes) and the group hope to raise awareness and therefore respect for the area within the community.
