Survey Of Manor Garth
Location: Leeds

A geophysical survey of Manor Garth Hill
A geophysical survey of Manor Garth Hill followed. Manor Garth, or Cheeney Basin as it is known locally, is the earthwork remains of a ringwork and bailey castle near the church.
Prior to the Norman conquest Manor Garth appears to belong to Earl Edwin of Mercia, Earl Morcar. An entry in the Doomsday book of 1086 is as follows, “In Chipech and Ledstune Earl Edwin had 1 caracute of land for geld and 10 ploughs can be there. To this manor also belongs land which is properly called Berewit (Barwick in Elmet)”
Kippax appears to have been the headquarters of Earl Edwins estates, where his main residence would have been and where he would have held court, dispensed justice and seen to the day to day running of the estate.
Unfortunately the geophysical survey of Manor Garth Hill did not tell us any more than we knew already.
