The Groups History
Location: Leeds
History of Kippax & District Historical Society
The society was formed in the late 1980s following a series of evening classes on Local History at Brigshaw School. For many years the society met in the old schoolroom, behind the Library, and meetings mainly consisted of having visiting speakers with some research by a few of the members.
In 1993 it was decided to reduce the number of lectures and concentrate on producing some written history about Kippax and the surrounding area. The first issue of The Kippax Chronicle was produced in that year, in time for the Local History Fair held on 31 July at The Town Hall, Leeds. It was part of the Leeds Centenary Year celebrations. A total of fourteen issues have been produced so far. It was then decided to concentrate our efforts to compile and publish a definitive history of Kippax.
During the period since 1993 several field walking events have taken place. Collections of finds were undertaken and evidence of Stone Age occupation of Kippax was found, as well as Medieval and later finds. Most years the society have conducted field trips to local places of interest, mostly local churches, but one was to Pontefract Castle.
Another annual event has been the popular and well attended Village Walk, showing people the remaining historical features ( and talking about those which no longer remain) in the village. E. N. P. 2004.
