Our Journey! Our History! The History & Social Impact of the Jamaica Society (Leeds)
Location: Leeds

Through workshops, storytelling and desk research, the group aim to collate the traditions and influences of/on immigrant African-Caribbeans who have settled in West Yorkshire (particularly Leeds). They will document reminiscences and case studies which convey the heritage of the immigrant population from first generation Jamaicans to "largely-westernised" younger generations. They will record major social events, the structuring of their society and take a look forward to how Afro-Caribbeans can retain their heritage whilst being fully immersed in more traditional British culture.

Basic IT and desktop publishing training will facilitate the writing of the experiences over 50 years. Work will be undertaken by four volunteer groups - representing four age groups. The final publications will be targeted at secondary school pupils and adults to strengthen awareness of Caribbean heritage in Leeds and to stimulate local community initiatives.

In September 2002, a launch event and leaflet will accompany the book and a regular newsletter will follow. This should strengthen community co-operation (particularly in younger generations) and further the awareness of Afro-Caribbean culture in the Leeds area. Leeds City Council support this project.
