Awareness of Afro-Carribbean Culture

Dual Heritage

Marcia Hylton
Location: Leeds

Marcia Hylton experienced a personal journey after taking part in a media archive project for their Caribbean heritage whilst helping on this project. Marcia says "it's been amazing experience seeing the archive pictures of people who are still alive today in our community. I look at them now with different eyes, and I have a sense of pride".

The experience has been just as illuminating for her children, "my youngest son got a sense of where his grandparents came from and he looked at the older generation with more interest". Marcia's older son was inspired by his archive activities, possibly laying the foundations for a future career. After helping to film interviews with senior members of the Jamaican community, he is now considering a career in the media.

Marica realises that being born into a different generation can create subtle element of separation. "we (the second generation) have different values to the first generation; we have a different outlook". This project has created stronger links between the British born and the Jamaican born generations. As Marica says, "it's been good to share ideas".
