Summary of primary school questionnaire

High Street was a focus of attention . Litter on this street was a problem. · Over half of the children admitted feeling unsafe. The High Street was second on the list of most unsafe places.
Use of leisure facilities · The most widely used facilities were the leisure centre and swimming pool · The use of school out of hours was significant. · Interest in provision of new sporting activities was high. Football, snooker and volleyball were the most popular. · Only 37% felt that reasonable sports facility provision for the disabled was made. · The two main reasons given for not taking part in sport were lack of interest and unsuitable opening hours. Each reason was weighted at 42% to 45%.
Transport use · The public bus service is under used. Most of the children never travel to school by public transport. · Occasional use of public transport for social or leisure purposes is undertaken by about 50% of the children.
Provision of a new site for family leisure · Most children wanted this provision. · The most popular areas were near the Leisure Centre and Billy Woods. It is interesting that Billy Woods is also the highest rated place where the children felt unsafe. Publicising events · Notice boards were thought most effective. · Newspapers both free and local types came a close second.
Interest in the Environment · Over half thought the quality of the surrounding countryside was important. · 34% thought that it had improved over recent years. · 71% of children wanted to look after woodlands and care for trees. · Reducing traffic in Kippax was considered important alongside improving public transport and car sharing. · Environmentally aware 78% of this age range voted for recycling in line with the high schools opinions. · Heritage information and information about local walks also rated highly. · More than half wanted local walls to be repaired.
Heritage sites · The church and graveyard were high in the list of priorities for protection and conservation followed by the old infant school. · The library was greatly valued! · Green heritage sites requiring protection included Billy Woods and Cheeny Basin. The Lines and Polo Pond were also mentioned.
Events to be restored · The carnival and Queen. · Some events that already take place were also mentioned.
