Norman Motte and Bailey Research Project (Phase 2)
Location: Leeds

This active group are seeking to build on a previous project by undertaking an archaeological dig of a motte and bailey site to gain understanding of the lives of the people who lived there and knowledge of the early history of the village of Barwick in Elmet.

The group have liaised with and gained advice and support from English Heritage, the West Yorkshire Archaeological Service (County Archaeologist) and Leeds City Council to ensure high standards and the long term conservation and protection of the site. A professional archaeologist will work with the group over a period of approximately four weeks to carry out small scale research/training excavation on a site within the Barwick in Elmet hillfort.

The group under the supervision of the Country Archaeologist have made adequate provision for any finds discovered during the project and have submitted a comprehensive Finds Policy.

The group involves members of the local historical society, the Parish Council and other village groups and the project will invite local school pupils and the wider community to take part. The group will hold at least one public meeting and will offer conducted tours of the site over the Open Heritage Site weekend in September to increase public aweareness. The group will work with a designer to produce three interpretive signs illustrated by reconstruction drawings and research findings.
