Preserving Calverley Woods
Location: Leeds

Local people formed the Friends of Calverley Woods (FOCW) to work towards securing the woodlands for future generations. Working in conjunction with Leeds City Council and local groups they hope to develop a future woodland management plan addressing heritage, conservation and social benefit. they will work with professional bodies to carry out an archaeological survey, undertake a biodiversity survey and carry out an access audit.

Local people will attend archaeological workshops and flora and fauna workshops, ie bluebell walks, bats, birds and fungi. Practical skills will be developed by carrying out drystone walling training, woodland management training and seed collection with BTCV. The project will be interpreted by producing a short film of the practical workshops and features of the woodland, making the reports available to local libraries and on the website. A leaflet will be produced and an exhibition (including old photographs of the wood) will be held.
