Somalia Tradition
Location: Leeds

This project aims to raise awareness of the Somali heritage and culture in Harehills and across the City of Leeds. A community event will be organised to bring together local people to share and celebrate Somali recipes and traditional song. The Group will organise a training event with the Oral History Society to enable them to capture the experiences of local Somali families who have settled in Leeds. They anticipate involving over 400 people in this event and hope that it will attract interest across the whole community (Hovingham Primary School is interested).

Skill development and integration are very important aspects to this project for the group. The proposal includes provision for English language training and IT/website development training opportunities for participants. This will help the group to produce the outputs for the project which are a booklet documenting settlement of the Somali community in the city and celebrating local culture, promotional leaflets, audio CD and website.
