This project emerged from the East Midlands Earth Structure Society's (EMESS) wish to restore and conserve a Lincolnshire mud and stud thatched cottage. The building is in a very poor state, under threat of demolition and urgently requires restoration on a suitable site.
A community group from Elsham has agreed to partner EMESS to oversee the dismantling, restoration and interpretation of this traditional two room Lincolnshire building. It will be re-sited within the grounds of Elsham Hall. The building's structure, function and the living conditions of its original inhabitants will be studied by the group and this will be interpreted within the restored building. Much of the physical restoration work will be undertaken as a training exercise in traditional crafts by a partnership of locals and volunteers. The process will be monitored by an architect and an archaeologist.
The cottage is of significant regional interest and requires prompt attention to prevent its irreversible demise. In recognition of this both local authorities, Voluntary Action Lincs and Yorkshire Museums Council fully support the project.
The work will preserve traditional building and craft skills (carpentry and thatching) plus survey and interpretation work. On completion, the group will ensure maintenance of the building and will run open days where people can learn about the building's heritage.
