All's Well at St Mary's
Location: North Yorkshire

The group would like to carry out a comprehensive study of the historic well and Octagonal well house in the grounds of the C12th St Mary's Church.

The grant is being applied for in two phases. Phase 1 is to open up the access to the well for all users and involve the local community and children from Thronton in Craven school in a project to raise awareness of the local significance of the site. It is believed the well house is unique in the area.

The study will include research into the Rev. Henry Richardson who inscribed message on the well in the C18th to instill in the local population the importance of clean water to good health.

Local people will have the opportunity to get involved in practical conservation tasks to help construct an access path to the well, local history research workshops under the direction of a local historian and visits to local care homes to invite older people to visit the well once the path is constructed.

Contributions from a web based project run by Thornton School will inform research and be used on an on-site interpretation panel to be funded by the NBS.
