Barwick in Elmet Earthworks Project
Location: North Yorkshire
The project aims to raise awareness and improve knowledge in the local community about the earthworks in the village.
The group have identified a lack of information about the ancient past of Barwick in Elmet and are seeking funding in order to rectify this. It is believed that these earthworks date back to the Iron Age and are possibly related to a Hill Fort. The group will be involved in the survey and will assist through scrub clearance in order to prepare the ground for the work. The group will also have the opportunity to assist with the surveying.
The group will hold two specific talks, one aimed at school children and one aimed at the wider community to encourage involvement in the project, and to disseminate the results of the surveys. The surveys will be housed in the County Records Office and at the local libraries. The report will also be offered to the new Leeds Museum.
It is hoped that the survey will take place before the end of January 2006.
| Local Community Involvement / Partnerships: |
| It is hoped that the survey will give more information about Hall Tower and that, in conjunction with a management agreement with English Heritage, the site will become a place to visit with leaflets and notice boards to explain the site to visitors. |
