Cawood Castle Garth
Location: North Yorkshire

The Project aims to raise awareness and investigate the archaeology, history and natural heritage of the site. The area is at the centre of the village and is an important amenity. The Cawood Castle Garth Group wish to raise awareness of the rich natural and built history of the area, which is the site of a medieval castle, the former palace of the Archbishop of York.

The group will carry out a geophysical and topographical survey and an access survey. The community will take part in these surveys through participation with the practical survey work and six specific community events will be held to encourage participation.

Access to the site will be improved and 3 interpretation boards designed and erected. The community will design and produce archaeological trail leaflets (500 copies), nature trail leaflets (500 copies). The group has close links with the village school and the group will produce an A-Z of Cawood (based on Common Ground's toolkit for communities), this will be printed and distributed throughout the village (1000 copies).

The group will produce a web page on which they will place a zoned map of the site (printed copies will also be available on request). The group hope that this map will help local people be able to use the area for events without damaging the site.
