Fairburn and District Historical Society
Location: North Yorkshire

The group would like to raise awareness of the local heritage of the village by designing and creating a heritage trail. This will include the restoration and enhancement of 3 features in the village; the gaol door, the village cross and stone trough and access improvements to part of the churchyard where there is a locally important grave of a soldier from the 2nd World War.

The historical Society will arrange guided walks and exhibitions to research the route and collect material for interpretation panels and to produce a guide leaflet with a map. Participants will be able to learn skills in local history research including organised visits to the County Archive, IT skills, design and writing skills and community consultation techniques.

The group have researched at least 50 historic buildings in the village, the trail will link into the RSPB reserve at Fairburn Ings and local people will be encouraged to share their memories and stories of growing up in the area.
