Friends of Hagg Wood Landscape Survey and Ecological Work
Location: North Yorkshire

The group plan to undertake a landscape survey of Hagg Wood in the context of the medieval township of Scoreby and then to carry out conservation work within the wood to preserve and enhance the historical features (ancient ditches and boundaries).

The group will work with a landscape historian to research existing documentary evidence and group members will learn archive and surveying/measuring techniques. Young members of the group will be taught map-reading and compass skills. The results of the research will be used to update the group's existing booklet and a map of the wood's historical features will be produced.

The group will celebrate and raise awareness of the woodlands heritage by holding an annual Wooldand Heritage Day Walk. The group will work with BTCV volunteers to clear ancient ditches and define boundaries between old management compartments. Group members will learn woodland management techniques and some will develop leadership skills. All members of the community will be encouraged to take part and through BTCV, volunteers from a much wider geographic area will become involved.
