Fryton Millennium Project
Location: North Yorkshire
This project is combining an initial historical survey with a heritage trail. The heritage trail is being accompanied by three heritage mosaics, benches and interpretative leaflets. The group carried out preliminary studies of the immediate area before starting the project. These studies uncovered a number of tumuli, earthworks, outline details of a former railway, and Viking, Roman and Neolithic connections. The group is now undertaking more in-depth studies. It is also creating the mosaics, making leaflets and providing a short route, all in order to celebrate their heritage.

Fryton village has 51 residents. A large majority have participated in the project.
In 1999 the residents of Fryton decided they would like to commemorate the millennium and after lengthy discussion it was agreed that a heritage trail would be constructed, consisting of a large mosaic, depicting life in the village and two smaller ones, one up at Fryton Woods and the other on the disused railway line. These smaller mosaics would be set into stone plinths from Burrows Davies of Strensall. As the trail would be situated partly on a public right of way, a bench, made from locally grown oak and made by Ian Warriner of Easingwold, would be placed at each mosaic to complete the trail.
Professional, artistic advice and guidance was sought from Rural Arts North Yorkshire (RANY). Margaret Murphy was inspirational and guided the project all the way.
The semi-circular mosaic was based on six MDF segments covered in brown paper. The design was drawn onto the paper, tiles were glued down using wallpaper paste and when dry, shuttering placed around each segment to hold in the concrete poured on top. The finished segments were then inverted and the paper peeled off to reveal the picture, which was then grouted to produce the finished mosaic.
Work soon started and many cold evenings were spent over the winter cutting and pasting tiles. Motivation was the hardest part and although most villagers did a bit, the majority of the work was done by the enthusiastic few and therefore took much longer to complete.
However, eventually it all came together and the trail was complete in 2002. The Hon. Simon Howard of Castle Howard kindly agreed to perform the official opening ceremony, which took place on 7th September 2002.
Although the Trail has been completed, the project is still ongoing. The main mosaic has become a social gathering place, especially in the summer and will be encircled by low bench seating, which will also provide protection from straying vehicles as they pass through the village.
An information leaflet has also been designed with the help of RANY and this will eventually be printed in quantity and distributed around the local shops and tourist information office.
Ryedale District Council donated a large quantity of spring bulbs, which have been planted on the trail, and it is planned to add this planting in the future The trail can be accessed from the B1257 and further information can be obtained from Paddy Morrow on 01653 628658. |
