Great Ayton Community Archaeology Project (Phase 2)

Great Ayton Community Archaeology Group
Location: North Yorkshire

The group was recently formed due to considerable local interest in the archaeological heritage of Great Ayton and Little Ayton parishes. After 35 locals attended a one-day training session with the Museum's Council, the group decided to work with a specialist archaeologist to survey and research both parishes.

Features of interest include a Neolithic Cairn, geological Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), several industrial heritage sites and the villages themselves. Under instruction, they will create a public database (on CD Rom) of historical data upon which an exhibition will be based.

The group aim to achieve a high degree of competence in surveying and project management and are thus investing in a large amount of training. This will result in them being relatively self-reliant and able to undertake more detailed projects in the future.

The grant will also fund IT equipment/software and surveying equipment. The group is aiming to increase the local awareness of local heritage through this project. They also plan to set up a history society to ensure a long term commitment to local historical research.

Approaches for support are being made to schools, scout groups and a number of interest groups.
