News Heights

A view of the west face of our local pointed mountain, Roseberry Topping, and shows clearly the face of the collapse of this part of the hill. This happened in 1910 and was thought to be due to the extensive ironstone mining under the whole of the hill. © R.H. de wardt

This shows a pasture where medieval rig and firrow cultivation is clearly visible. This was in aprt of one of the medieval great fields and is one of the few clearly remaining examples of rig and furrow in the parish © R.H. de wardt
This plane is a veteran of the last war, having been built in 1944 and first flown in 1945. It has special dispensation to continue to fly with the RAF roundel and its RAF number, although it is now registered as a civil aircraft. © R.H. de wardt

Great Ayton Community Archaeology Project Part 2 (Phase 2)
Location: North Yorkshire

This project will build on the success of archaeological research carried out in the first LHI project.

The group would like now like to investigate aspects of the built industrial and social history related to 3 sites in the project area. These are Levensdale, Aireyholme and Roseberry Topping and Ayton banks. Volunteers will be able to participate in researching for example the development of agriculture, the country house at Angrove, dialect poetry, early tourist literature and mining/mineral extraction and the way of life of the workers who manned these industries. This will involve oral history projects (with training from University of Teesside) and desk top/archive research.

The project will produce data for the SMR, leaflets to interpret features along 2 heritage trails (industrial railways, 2nd world war, Captain Cook's monument) a booklet, public presentations and material for local schools,.
