Hartwith Heritage Project
Location: North Yorkshire

The group aims to research the history of the landscape within the Parish of Hartwith cum Winsley, a parish of around 5,000 acres situated in Nidderdale, North Yorkshire.

Building on the experiences of researching the Hartwith Heritage Walk that was launched in 2003 the Group plan to conduct a comprehensive desktop survey and on-site archaeology survey from the Rights of Way in the Parish, carrying out a recording programme of the natural environment and social history that has formed the landscape as it is today.

Our Parish of Hartwith cum Winsley contains a diverse landscape from rocky moorland and agricultural land to riverside pastures. We have ancient semi-natural woodland, evidence of prehistoric settlement, monastic management and former industries.

The Hartwith Heritage Group, which has been formed through the Parish Council brings together a group of volunteers who are interested in researching the local history and archaeology.

Our objectives are to involve local people in researching the landscape archaeology, natural environment and social history of the Parish, by carrying out non-invasive archaeological surveys, desk-top research and information gathering. It will be guided by a professional community archaeologist and will be based on public rights of way.

Opportunities will be provided for local people to get involved in surveying techniques, desktop research (including interpreting maps), report writing and IT.

We plan to meet one day each fortnight, when we will aim to discover and record information about our local heritage. The initial phase of three months will be spent on procuring resources, initial training and exploratory walks to decide which areas will be investigated.

We intend to collate the material in a digitally available database and interpret the findings in a report and as a series of leaflets, exhibitions and guided walks, which will be accessible to the community. It will also provide a local archive for use in future years.
