This project provides a programme of educational activities for the local community exploring the heritage of the garden.

As a first step, the Helmsley Walled Garden has published a Cook Book, a collection of recipes provided by local people and businesses. It offers a representative cross section of contemporary and traditional cooking in the region. The illustrations have been volunteered by local artists. The aim is twofold: to preserve local traditions and to raise funds for programmes of the Garden.

The Garden has also organised a series of local cookery classes given by some of the contributors to the book and based, if not exclusively, on recipes in it, using local produce from the Walled Garden. The first two courses have proved a success. Each with 25 participants, they were fully booked. There is a waiting list for a possible third course. Enquiries to Denise Kitchin on: 01439 771721.

The Garden is also organising an educational project to collect and record the living memories of older people with recollections of the Garden and of folk associated with it. The Walled Garden would like to hear from those who would be willing to be interviewed or could suggest possible candidates. Please contact Elke Laver: 01751 432 648.

In spring 2005 there will be a formal opening of the newly rebuilt historic glasshouse complex financed by grants from the Heritage Lottery. There will be a exhibition documenting the history of the Garden.
