Howsham Mill Project
Location: North Yorkshire
The project will raise awareness of a rare gothic style water mill which is currently in a state of disrepair, including the natural history of the surrounding area. This will be achieved through investigating the history of the mill itself through archive research and by conducting an oral history project which records accounts of some of the last people to live in the mill.
The information gathered will be used to produce leaflets, postcards and booklets, to encourage more members of the community to become involved. The group will use this information to mount a mobile exhibition which will tour the surrounding villages to encourage involvement.
The group also plan to raise awareness of the natural heritage of the area, which is an SSSI and home to some rare species. This will be achieved through interpretation boards.
The community will be encouraged to complete visitors surveys of the wildlife they see while on site and this will be fed into the groups work. The natural heritage of the site and its links to its industrial heritage will be explored through a series of courses on traditional woodland industries such as charcoal burning.
Volunteers from the community will undertake footpath works such as clearance of scrub, and they will also assist with the construction of a path for people with mobility difficulties to access the area (NBS award).
