Pocklington Canal - Completion of the Restoration of the Top Lock!
Location: North Yorkshire

The project involved the restoration of the top lock of the Pocklington Canal with associated interpretation and sensitive landscape works. The canal dates back to 1818 and is a site of significant local, ecological and industrial heritage value. It is within a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and is Grade II listed.

The top lock is situated at the very public terminal point on the canal where the greatest potential for interpretation exists. Its restoration would permit a large number of people to learn about the canal. It may well also stimulate others to assist in the initiative to complete the restoration of the remaining four miles for which Heritage Lottery Funding may be sought in future. Full restoration would result in a navigable canal benefiting visitors, whether canal enthusiasts, educational users or those at leisure.

Furthermore, the project will complement the group's work on interpretation and habitat restoration presently being undertaken in partnership with English Nature. Whilst much of the work to the lock must be commissioned, the group will be spending approximately 28 volunteer days clearing and interpreting the site. Ongoing maintenance has been arranged in association with British Waterways. Follow up work aimed at celebrating this heritage and educating others about the feature is planned.
