Sheriff Hutton W.I. Pale Project
Location: North Yorkshire

Sheriff Hutton Castle is an extremely important (though ruined) medieval building, built in the early 15th Century. It was a residence of King Richard III and was at one time the seat of the Council of the North. It has an extensive Deerpark and its pale, the remains of which are largely still there, bound the whole area. The group wishes to research and produce a map of the pale to be kept in the village hall and local archives.

The group will produce a book of their research into the history of the castle. The project is led and managed by the WI who accepted a challenge to do a community project set by their head office last year. They plan to involve all sections of the local community including the school through guided walks to research the extent of the pale/history of the castle and produce the map.

Talks by local historians/archaeologists will be held. Volunteers will develop skills in local history research, IT, writing, photography, teamwork and mapping. A website will be produced and a community event held including an exhibition and launch.
