The project aims to raise awareness of the "steers" dialect and the local, traditional fishermen's choir through the preservation and performing of songs. The "steers" dialect is peculiar to the fishing community around Staithes.
The group will produce a traditional songbook, annotated with explanations of the dialect, the meaning of songs and an historical explanation of the traditional way of life for the fishing community. This will be accompanied by a video and CD of performances punctuated with oral histories.
The project will culminate in a concert and exhibition of local dialect and choirs. Although Staithes has a population of only a few hundred people, the choir has around 18 members who will work with approximately 30 other locals and the primary school to undertake the project.
Any monies raised will allow the choir to increase local awareness of their work through visiting local schools, developing links with other choirs and attending concerts.
The project group is relatively large and takes in a broad cross-section of the small community. The dialect and choir exemplify the distinctive nature of Staithes and by performing these features of the local heritage they will be shown in their "live" form.
The group is committed to keeping this heritage alive. Linking with other choirs will maintain this aspect of their culture and more widely, the fishing community's culture. The project is seen as a platform to develop this work.
