The project aims to increase local awareness of the old part of Stokesley - a conservation area of considerable interest. This will be done by producing a town trail booklet and by undertaking the restoration of the historic 18th century Kent Gate. A shorter route for the less-able will also be produced.
This project combines increasing local awareness of Stokesley's built heritage with restoration of a Grade II Listed gateway of considerable interest. It involves skills-learning in areas of research and publication which will involve schools and a number of local groups who have been rather isolated.
It is not a single project but a means of cementing together the groups and initiatives that are ongoing in the village. It will also set up a more holistic approach to conserving and interpreting Stokesley. Future restoration projects will arise from the research - including some of the village 'wynds' and a stone stock-gathering pen. The project will be promoted in the local newspaper and at an event in the village hall. Completion will be marked by a presentation in November.
