Studfold Community Nature Project
Location: North Yorkshire

This group wish to undertake a survey of physical landscape features, archaeological features and the flora and fauna on a farm site situated in a remoterural area of Nidderdale ANOB.

There is evidence of human habitation from Neolithic times, monastic management, early industrial use such a lead, marble, iron and coal mining and the group wish to examine the impact humans have had on the landscape and biodiversity.

The aim of their research is to raise awareness and understanding of the natural history of the site and its relationship with humans. The group will work under the guidance of a professional naturalist and a community archaeologist and will share their findings via exhibitions, a digital archive, a report and through the Nidderdale Show.

The group will work with local schools and the local secondary school who wish to be involved in the project and share their work internationally through the Globe Programme who have already contacted the group. The group are keen to involve other local schools with the aim of encouraging interest in the environment and developing positive attitudes towards its care and conservation.

An initial meeting of the group attracted volunteers from across a wide area and many others have contacted the group since. Volunteers will receive training in map interpretation, interpretation of landscapes and natural history, IT skills and field and natural history surveying.
