The Lofthouse and Middlesmoor Project
Location: North Yorkshire

The group will explore the social and built heritage of Upper Nidderdale. The group will use oral history techniques in order to capture the memories and dialect of the older members of the community and explore the social heritage of the area. The community will be invited to contribute to this aspect of the project through a number of workshops (weekly through the life of the project).

The group will also explore the built environment, investigating the history of deserted farmsteads, villages and hamlets. The group will use desk based research in order to inform this aspect of the project.

The group and interested members of the community will be trained on the methodologies of desk research. The group will keep members of the community informed through the life of the project by producing and distributing community newsletters and by holding presentations, exhibitions and guided walks around the area of study.

The group will also gather further information from members of the community through the production of a questionnaire for each household in the area. Once completed, this will enable the group to access private records in the possession of individuals to add to their work.
