The Rawmarsh Manor Farm History Group was formed to promote and celebrate the cultural heritage of Rawmarsh. This is being carried out through research of locally archived material and personal reminiscences from interviews with members of the community. Younger generations have no first hand experience of the way the Coal and steel Industries once affected the area and influenced the environment. Deep mining has gone forever from the community but has left its mark on the environment. The steel industry has changed in such a way that its impact on the town environment is now minimal. Much of the heritage of the village has been lost or is unrecognisable. The memories and reminiscences of grandparents are still accessible and need to be recorded. The group will purchase the necessary equipment, train members of the group on how to use it and then invite as many people as possible from Rawmarsh to contribute . The archiving sessions will be published locally. A core group of members are committed to running sessions and training others. Members of the community who are unable to get to meetings will be involved by members of the group visitng them.
The group is now focused upon the creation of a searchable digital community archive of photographs, memorabilia, stories and oral reminiscences that will enable the group to involve the community in the project. Children will be involved through the local school, older people through interviews and the general public through a book, temporary exhibitions and a public event. A compact disc of the archive will enable the research to be made available to the community through exhibitions, schools and other community groups.
The guidance of a tutor supplied by the Worker's Educational Association will ensure a high standard of production of the digital archive, CD and book.
