Strike!
Location: Rotherham

The group aims to share knowledge of the coal-mining heritage of the area and the Bag Muck Strike of 1902 that saw 3000 workers withdraw their labour from the Denaby and Cadeby collieries due to a wage dispute.

The project will involve local people researching the history of the collieries, including disasters and strikes (the Bag Muck Strike lasted for 9 months and resulted in 750 families being evicted from their homes).

Samples of the equipment used in the collieries have been preserved locally but the group feels that this does not tell the whole story. They intend to work in partnership with 'darts', a local arts organisation to carry out oral history workshop and make a record of local people's experiences of life when the mines were open and interpret this and the history of the collieries including the strike as a collection of songs.

This will involve 5 local groups involving three primary schools, adults with learning disabilities from Conisbrough Social Education Centre and Craganour Tenants and Residents association. The songs will be rehearsed in local schools and performed at the Miners Welfare. A CD Rom will be designed and produced by the group and a written report will be produced by the group including photographs and material from the oral history workshops.
