Archaeology of the Middle Porter Valley and Accompanying Ecology Survey
Location: Sheffield

This is Phase 2 of a project to further investigate the archaeology and ecology of the middle section of the Porter Valley and will complete a survey of the full valley. Phase 1 concentrated on the northern section.

Members of the group enjoyed the walks and talks given as part of Phase 1 so they requested that Phase 2 to be carried out. Walks and talks on archaeology and ecology have been planned for Phase 2 as well as other independent complementary walks.

The Middle Porter valley is thought to be unique (possibly in the whole of Europe) because of its evolution from agricultural to industrial use. The Valley has been listed in its entirety by English Heritage from the border of the Peak District right down to Endcliffe Park which has an historic landscape created by Goldring in the late 19th Century.

The results of the survey will be used to inform the public and professional bodies of the unique heritage of the site. The wider community will be informed and involved in the project through an extensive series of walks, displays and open meetings. A trail brochure will be produced to lead visitors through the Valley.
