Changing Times - Changing Lives A Shiregreen Experience
Location: Sheffield
The aim of this project is to foster interest in the local history of the Shiregreen estate and encourage involvement in uncovering local stories and experiences through oral history. The estate is one of the most deprived in Sheffield and the project will be supported by the Estate Development Workers employed by the Children and Families project.
At least 10 oral history workshops will be run encouraging intergenerational work from existing groups (lunch clubs, senior club, junior club, women's training and support group) and the wider community. The estate was completed in 1934 and at the time was the largest development in the city with shops, churches and schools on site. In recent years the Church has become a focal point for community led regeneration and skill development. It is open to all and runs social activities and training in the daytime and evening catering for a broad cross section of the community.
Skills will be developed in communication and improving literacy, confidence building in small groups, oral history research under the direction of a Project Worker (Oral History Society to be consulted on the contract specification for the Project Worker) and IT.
The outputs will include booklets, and a CD-Rom, promotional material, displays and a celebration event.
