The group has undertaken training in archaeology and has already designed an archaeological trail through this ancient woodland which contains a Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM). They now wish to undertake more detailed investigative work of some particularly interesting features, namely:
under guidance, undertake a metric survey of a hilltop enclosure; examine the 100 or so Q-pits (probably related to lead smelting) with British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV); improve access to archaeological features; produce a natural history leaflet to complement the existing archaeology one.The group hope to increase local participation in what is already a large group (130+ volunteers). They will also run promotional events and guided walks to ensure that locals not taking part in the project can learn about the Woods.
The group see this as a first phase of LHI work, with further projects to follow.
