Four Counties View
Our ‘not for profit’ group was formed in November 2002 by local residents who were concerned that the 28 acre Fox Lane Recreation fields, Frecheville, Sheffield, were becoming neglected.

We would like to improve the fields for the benefit of wildlife and the local community, but have been prevented from carrying out any work on the fields
The £23115 grant from the Local Heritage Initiative has been re-negotiated and has now been used in three areas.

1) A full phase 1 and 2 Ecological survey of the site has been carried out by local Ecologist Roger Butterfield and by Hallam Environment Consultants Limited. The results of the surveys have been published and are available to view or download on our website. They are also available in local libraries and in the main local studies library, Surrey Street, Sheffield.
2) We are currently researching the local history of the Birley/Frecheville and upper Gleadless area. (Ordnance Survey ref: SK 3953 8304). The information, when collated, will be published in a small book.
3) We have held walks and events on the fields where we have recorded sightings of birds, wildlife, wildflowers, grasses and fungi. We will be publishing an informative leaflet of the flora and fauna found on the Fox Lane fields.

Saturday 21st Aug 2004
An afternoon walk was lead by ecologist Roger Butterfield around the Fox Lane Recreation fields, pointing out features of interest. He also showed us some of the flora and fauna, which he has discovered whilst carrying out the first of our Ecological Surveys.
This walk was funded by Sheffield City Council, Parks, Woodlands & Countryside small grants.

Sunday 22nd May 2005
A second walk around Fox Lane fields lead by ecologist Roger Butterfield. Roger produced a colourful booklet showing several species which he had identified in his survey. The booklet was given out to those who came to the walk and has been put into local libraries.

Saturday 9th July 2005
An afternoon walk was led by Christine Handley to introduce us to wildlife recording. We walked around about half of the field and recorded butterflies, wildflowers, grasses etc. The records will be forwarded to Sheffield City Council’s Ecology Unit for them to add to their database of records across Sheffield.

Friday 29th July 2005
Paul Howden-Leach of Hallam Environment Consultants Limited led an event where we looked for bats and signs of small mammals which inhabit the field. We learnt to use bat detectors which meant we heard and saw pipistrelle bats. We also attracted several types of moths by putting a fruity and sugary liquid onto the trees.

Thursday 29th September 2005
Local Historian Len Widdowson gave a slide show and very informative talk about the local history of Frecheville, Birley and surrounding areas. The event was attended by 24 people and was enjoyed by all. Attended by twenty four people.

Sunday 2nd October 2005
Dr Paul Ardron lead a walk on the Fox Lane fields, where we discovered many species of fungi and lichens. Some were unusual and have been sent for identification. When this completed we will publish a list on our website. A copy will be sent to the Ecology Unity, Meersbrook Park. Attended by ten people.

Thursday 6th October 2005
We held a local history workshop at Gleadless Library which was lead by Dr Melvyn Jones and Mrs Joan Jones. They gave an insight into the various sources of local history, and how to extract useful information from maps, wills and inventories, and the meaning of place names. Event attended by 25 people.

Thursday 13th October 2005.
A second local history workshop was held at Gleadless Library which was lead by Dr Melvyn Jones and Mrs Joan Jones. They gave an informative and amusing insight into the many sources of information available at libraries and local archives. We also enjoyed a slide show. The event was attended by 22 people.

Friday 21st October 2005.
Fourteen people visited the Chesterfield local studies library, where the Librarians gave us a tour of the archive files, and various sources of information. We were shown how to use a microfiche and computer to view such information as early newspapers, census information and electoral registers. The visit was enjoyed by all, and very informative.
Unfortunately the local studies library could only accommodate a small group, but another local studies visit could be held in early 2006.
