Wharncliffe Heath Nature Reserve
Location: Sheffield

This project aims to involve the local community in:

  • the research of the archaeology of the site;
  • implementing a programme of management works to best conserve this;
  • raise local awareness (complementing wildlife conservation).

    The heath includes Iron Age and Romano-British archaeology of considerable interest. Part of Wharncliffe Heath is a Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM), and part is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and County Nature Reserve. It is well-used by the community, many of whom wish to better understand its history.

    The Heath is managed by a committee of locals and representatives of conservation and interest groups. Training will be given to allow local volunteers to assist in the historical and archaeological research and survey work covering the heath and woodland. This should allow for features to be better understood, interpreted and managed. On-site intepretation, a leaflet and guided walks will be designed by the community volunteers which includes a number of schools. Practical site management volunteer days will also be run, linked to accredited training schemes.
