Fitzwilliam Community History Project
Location: Wakefield

The group would like to work with local people to capture stories and recollections from the older generation in the village when the community was at the heart of the Yorkshire coalfields.

Members of the Youth Group and the Darby and Joan Club will work together on the project as well as volunteers from the wider community. This will involve training in oral history reminiscence work including audio and visual recordings of community members recollecting their memories, design and web training.

The miner's welfare is a central point for community activity and sessions will be held here on oral history and the project will be taken into sheltered accommodation to reach the older members of the community. People will be encouraged to contribute their old photographs of the village for a touring exhibition and to be scanned into a database. The material will be collated as an on-line archive containing pictures, audio and visual recordings. This will be made available to the LHI website and a local history website will be set up for the village. The information will be made available to the local community, libraries and schools as a CD ROM.
