A City of Friends Working together to reveal the heritage of York's Local Nature Reserves
Location: York
Three Friends groups; Friends of Hob Moor, St Nicholas Fields and Friends of Clifton Backies will work in partnership to deliver this project. The City of York Council is supporting the groups and will administer the grant under the guidance of a steering group formed by members of the three groups.
Together they plan to carry out a series of activities and events on each site engaging with the local community to uncover and interpret the unique heritage each site contains. They plan to work together to share local expertise and resources. From local knowledge and contact made with the County Archaeologist and English Nature the groups are aware that Hob Moor is an ancient common, Medieval ridge and furrow is visible and it is largely unimproved grassland. Clifton Backies used to be an airfield (evidence of utility buildings is visible) and St Nicks was once a brick works.
Through wildlife surveys, community events organised to gather photographs and memorabilia and a local history walk the project will involve up to 1800 people including school groups.
Outputs will also include interpretation panels on each site, an accessible booklet designed by participants and information for the LNR and LHI websites.
